The Head of the National Disaster Management Centre, after having deliberations with various organs of state and Heads of Provincial Disaster Management Centres through Intergovernmental Structures, and after assessing the magnitude and severity of severe weather that resulted in snowfall, strong and damaging surface winds, heavy rainfall, and flooding from 09 June 2025, causing significant impact in the Eastern Cape and potential impact in parts of the Western Cape, Free State and KwaZulu-Natal provinces that resulted in the loss of life, damage to property, infrastructure and the environment, as well as the disruption of basic services, has given notice that, in terms of Section 23(1)(b) of the Disaster Management Act, 2002 (Act No. 57 of 2002), the impact caused by this severe weather system in the provinces listed above has been classified as a National Disaster.
